The “Guides” program is an employment opportunity developed in conjunction with High School sophomores and juniors.

Detective Pikachu

Mix live action and animation 2019  – Wednesday July 7th at 2pm

Ryan Reynolds (voice of Pikachu)

STORYLINE: In a world where people collect Pokemon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective.

Tim (Justice Smith) may be the only person in the world who doesn’t love Pokémon; in fact, he rejects them. When he learns that his detective dad was killed in a suspicious crash, he’s forced to join forces with Pokémon Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds), the only creature who can help him crack the case.

WATCH FOR: Ryan Reynolds’ voice coming out of a little fluffy hamster-y thing is innately amusing, but his lines are also sharp, silly and knowing. Instead of being drily reverent to the multi-billion dollar product that inspired it, it’s confident that it’s so beloved that it can make relentless, affectionate fun of it, with the help of a small, yellow, creature.

The Iron Giant

Animation 1999 – Wednesday July 14th at 2pm

STORYLINE: This is the story of a nine-year-old boy named Hogarth Hughes who makes friends with an innocent alien giant robot that came from outer space. Meanwhile a paranoid US Government agent named Kent Mansley arrives in town, determined to destroy the giant at all costs. It’s up to Hogarth to protect him by keeping him at Dean McCoppin’s place in the junkyard.

WATCH FOR: Captures and crystallizes its source material's anxious, humane spirit. It might be the most empathetic and exhilarating mainstream American animated feature ever made. Tender, moving and exciting for kids (and their secretly tearful parents).

Paddington 2

Animation 2018 – Wednesday July 21st at 2pm

STORYLINE: While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucys hundredth birthday, Paddington sees a unique pop-up book in Mr Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief.

WATCH FOR: Filled with tiny, fleeting moments, which are slyly clever. Comedy brilliance and visual dazzle, brushed past without fuss. Paddington doesn’t like to make a fuss. Except when it comes to the bad guy.

Matilda

Live action 1996 – Wednesday July 28th at 2pm

dir danny DeVito

STORYLINE: The much praised film adaptation of a Roald Dahl work tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father and mother.

WATCH FOR: Matilda develops psychokinetic abilities and uses them to deal with her disreputable family and Agatha Trunchbull, the ruthless, oppressive, and tyrannical principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary School.  A lively powerful exploration of a young girl surviving a world that can be challenging.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Live action CGI 2017 – Wednesday August 4th at 2pm

STORYLINE: Four teenagers discover an old video game console and are literally drawn into the game’s jungle setting becoming the adult avatars they choose.

WATCH FOR: Based on a video game the story uses characters’ magical powers to change reality. What develops is a positive moral. It  honors redemptive courage, working together, sacrifice, and using your talents for good.

Spider-man Into the Spider Verse 2018

Animation  2018 – Wednesday August 11th at 2pm

STORYLINE: Set in a shared multiverse called the " Spider-Verse ", the film's story follows Miles Morales of Earth-1610 as he becomes the new Spider-Man and joins other Spider-People from various dimensions to save New York City from the Kingpin.

WATCH FOR: Where the Marvel Universe has become hopelessly overstuffed with characters and plot lines, this version emulates the chaotic, anything-goes mash-ups of a child’s playtime. They’re postmodern pop-art Rumpelstiltskins, spinning corporate directives into original, self-referential, self-effacing art.
